Anak Mindanao hails Sec. Lopez’s Closure Order to 23 Mining Companies

The Anak Mindanao (AMIN), a leading Party-list Organization in the House of Representatives has expressed its all-out support to the decision of DENR’s Secretary Gina Lopez’s order to close twenty-three (23) mining operations and to suspend another five (5) mining companies of the 43 mines in the Philippines. Anak Mindanao also hails the Environment Secretary’s cancellation of seventy-five (75) mining contracts within the watershed areas; of which of the 75, majority of the canceled mining contracts are from Mindanao at 37.

Anak Mindanao opines that the closure order is long overdue and as a progressive organization, AMIN underscores the negative repercussions of the present mining practices to the environment and it does not conform to the principles of sustainable development, especially in Mindanao.

AMIN advocates for responsible mining and sustainable development. The basic to follow is the compliance to the existing environmental laws. As Secretary Lopez reiterates that “Water is life. You kill water, you kill life”, AMIN also believes that in able to sustain the ideal communities in Mindanao, they shall “live in harmony with nature.”

With this development, the organization is calling to environment and peace loving citizens all over the country, especially the Mindanaoans to show the same their support to the DENR’s Secretary as she faces more challenges due to her closure order.

Finally, Anak Mindanao is requesting President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to uphold the closure order.
